Howard Stern laid off as Sirius and XM merge
As in most cases when companies merge, there are always layoffs. It's no exception with the merger of XM Satellite and Sirius Satellite. This morning the new merged company announced that it is laying off radio personality Howard Stern.
"We already have 'The Opie & Anthony' show with XM and there's really no need to have Howard Stern doing the same schtick," says Mel Karmazin, CEO of SIRIUS XM Radio. "Plus we really need to save money on Howard's contract and re infuse the money into channel 73. That's our SPA 73 where we play relaxing sounds of the best in new age and ambient music."
As for what will happen with channels 100 and 101 that were the homes for Howard Stern, Karmazin says the channels could be given to former Stern staffer and current Tonight Show announcer Stuttering John Melendez who is expected to be unemployed when Jay Leno leaves NBC.
This stinks and I dont like it.
